Companies vie for first place in market for obesity devices

Medtronic, Enteromedics and other device makers are trying to develop medical devices to control or cure obesity, a market that may be as big as $100 million. Medtronic is experimenting with a battery-operated gastric pacemaker, following a fling with an implantable gastric stimulator that failed in a clinical trial. Meanwhile, startup Enteromedics is teaming with the Mayo Clinic on a similar device.
