The Mayan sacred wells, or cenotes, in the Yucatan offer intriguing underwater scenery and a sense of history, according to The Miami Herald. The sinkholes, of which there are thousands, serve as entrances to the world's largest system of underwater caves, and some theorize they were sites of ritual human sacrifice in the Mayan culture.
