Generics getting boost as patents expire

Patents are set to expire on 75 brand-name drugs over the next two years, and the overall generic market should reap a 10% to 12% sales gain each year for the next five years, according to one consulting firm. Drugs such as Zocor, Ambien, Zoloft and Pravachol are to come off patent soon, but some experts warn the generics' gain is threatened by mainstream drug companies' plans for authorized generics and legal challenges that hold off the generic competition.
