Broadcom's profit falling, chips still selling

Chip maker Broadcom watched first-quarter profit slide 48% because of research costs. The company's net income dropped to $61 million from $117.7 million, but sales remained about the same at $901.5 million. Research was boosted in the areas of mobile phone, TV and set-top box chips.
