Google unveils image search breakthrough

VisualRank is a new Google algorithm that the search giant's engineers claim will transform image search by putting it on par with its PageRank system for Web pages. The new algorithm, which combines image-recognition software with methods for prioritizing and ranking images that most resemble each other, is seen as an improvement on the current method, which relies on the text that accompanies images to produce the search results.
