Mentor program helps new D.C.-area teachers learn on the job

Teachers in the neediest schools in Washington, D.C., are getting more support at the beginning of their careers, through training and mentoring programs. Officials say the additional support is meant to lower the rate of attrition among new teachers. "Our new teachers have to learn quickly. They have to learn everything quickly. They have no time to ease into it," said Sharon Hodges, coordinating supervisor for teacher leadership in Prince George's County, Md., schools.
