Stimulus funds now paying for Superfund program

While the Superfund program was based on the idea that companies that caused toxic pollution would be responsible for its cleanup, the government is finding itself spending $600 million in federal stimulus money to clean up some Superfund sites. Officials say money became scarce after a tax supporting the program expired nearly 15 years ago, and taxpayers are responsible for paying when the polluter cannot.
