Oracle's purchase of Sun Microsystems and Cisco's recent decision to bundle servers with routers catapults the two vendors into direct competition with IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. Ed Sperling analyzes what this will mean for the enterprise IT budget. "What makes this battle interesting is that each of these companies makes the majority of its money somewhere else," Sperling writes. "... That means each of these companies can afford to sell servers at a loss for years, maybe decades."
