Water gardens that are versatile and easy to manage can enhance landscapes, writes Mary-Kate Mackey. Contemporary designs include steel walkways that cross over water, with wooden benches on one island and luxury seating on the other. Another option uses a series of streams and pools with native plants, ferns or other minimal-care woodland plants on the surrounding banks.
