China rebuilds schools in earthquake zone

China recently began rebuilding schools demolished by the Sichuan earthquake, mandating they be built to withstand earthquakes of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale. More than 7,000 schools collapsed in the earthquake last year, partially due to sub-par construction without adequate steel framing and reinforcement. The new schools will be constructed with steel plates and rubber inside the walls to act as a "cushion" in case of earthquakes.
