Florida bill lends support to parents' vaccine fears

Legislation in the Florida Senate would ban vaccines containing mercury and would allow parents more freedom to develop vaccine schedules for their children. Although major medical and governmental groups agree that there is no scientific link between thimerosal, a mercury-containing vaccine preservative, and autism, some parents remain fearful. Dr. Claude Earl Fox, a founding director of the Florida Public Health Institute, said the bill could cause vaccine shortages and would make the state a "laughingstock."
