Europe proposes airline aid package

The European Commission on Tuesday unveiled a plan to help airlines recover from a devastating airspace closure caused by a cloud of volcanic ash, while acknowledging that government aid could be seen as anti-competitive. Among the EC's proposed remedies: more night flights, more flexible rules on airport slots and deferred en-route charges for air traffic control. But actual cash aid would come from individual governments, prompting a warning from the EU transport commissioner that such aid must be based on "uniform criteria" and would be subject to review by competition authorities.
