Senate Republicans again prevent debate on regulatory revamp

Democrats said another unanimous vote by Republicans to block Senate debate on a bill to overhaul financial regulation was a political gamble. The vote came as a Senate panel questioned executives from Goldman Sachs. "This is political dynamite, and I think Republicans have lit the fuse," said Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J. Republicans, however, said that the politics of the situation are not as simple as Democrats are suggesting and that their leverage comes from a united front. "With 41 sticking together saying we need to continue the bipartisan negotiations, that is the leverage we have," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. "When we lose that, we lose leverage."
