Parents and advocates are concerned about special-education cuts in an Arizona district that may include the elimination of paraprofessional positions in inclusive classrooms, and some are questioning whether the cuts would violate federal law. "If you have an 'included student' who is in a general-education classroom for science and social studies but whose behavior, attention or other needs dictate that they have an assigned ... aide to participate and receive educational benefit, [then] IDEA ... mandates that the school provide an aide," one attorney said. District officials say students won't lose needed services.
