Household waste is potentially a potent energy source, writes Rose George in this opinion column, but barely 100 of America's 16,000 sewage-processing plants generate electricity from incoming waste. If the more than 500 plants already equipped to generate methane from incoming waste were to start using the gas to produce electricity, George writes, they could power 340,000 homes and offset 2.3 million tons of carbon emissions. "It's green to burn the brown stuff," she notes.
