How to determine if a lawn needs aeration

A lawn should be aerated if the soil is made of clay or is regularly compacted by people walking on it, writes Tom Heald, a managing partner of the Wyoming Plant Co. Aeration may not be needed if the lawn has plenty of night crawlers, which create space for moisture to flow. Avoid power raking because it damages the lawn and could encourage weed growth, Heald notes.
