U.S. lawmaker unveils criteria for NSF grants

Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, is proposing rules that would end peer review for the National Science Foundation. The chairman of the House science committee is seeking to require all projects to advance national health and security, be groundbreaking and not redundant. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, sent a letter to Smith saying the changes would "undo everything that has enabled NSF to contribute so profoundly to our national health, prosperity, and welfare."
