How "what-if" scenarios about history can boost learning

Studying the "what-ifs" of the past can help students understand that history is a series of choices, not fixed, unavoidable outcomes, write eighth-grade U.S. history teachers Jody Passanisi and Shara Peters. In this blog post, the teachers write that "what-if" questions, such as what if the Civil War had been resolved differently, help students think critically about history. They share insights from Twitter chat in which participants tweeted history "what-ifs" of their own. "In our classroom, we're always looking for ways to connect the past that we study to the present we inhabit," they write.
