When the ground is soft and moist -- as it is in Alaska in the spring -- too much foot traffic can compact the soil. Stepping stones can direct strollers away from sensitive lawn turf to a defined pathway. Early spring is also the time when lawns remain most vulnerable to damage, even from lawn chores such as raking.
