White House lawyers back family in special-education case

As U.S. Supreme Court justices considered this week a family's argument that a child with special needs should be reimbursed for private-school tuition even if the student never attended a public school, Obama administration lawyers took the family's side, saying that district lawyers were misreading the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act by denying the reimbursement. The justices deadlocked 4-4 in a similar case in 2007 after one justice recused himself for reasons that were not made public.
