BlackRock joins scramble to launch leveraged-loan funds

Anticipating investor demand for inflation hedges, BlackRock plans to launch a mutual fund that invests in short-term leveraged loans. "This is one asset class that should perform well when short-term rates start to rise," said Jeff Bakalar of ING Investment Management. According to a regulatory filing, 80% of the fund would be invested in a mixed portfolio of senior secured floating-rate loans and debt instruments, unsecured and subordinated fixed-rate and floating rate debt, and similar loans and debt instruments.
