Seattle viaduct gates will close road immediately after earthquake

The Washington Department of Transportation plans to install nine gates at entrances to a Seattle viaduct. The gates would seal off the Alaskan Way Viaduct within minutes of an earthquake. In 2001, motorists continued to drive over the damaged viaduct for several hours after an earthquake.
