Data-center consolidation promises big savings for federal government, report says

Federal agencies could save nearly $19 billion a year through data-center consolidation, and those savings could help fund the advancement of new technologies and services, according to a survey of federal IT decision makers by MeriTalk. Under a plan outlined in December by U.S. chief information officer Vivek Kundra, the government plans to close 800 of the 2,094 data centers that support federal government operations.
