New retail centers use mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly designs

The traditional enclosed retail center structure is increasingly becoming obsolete as developers rethink the centers' designs and incorporate new property types into the buildings. The hope is that mixed-use and more pedestrian-friendly destinations that include residential and office space will increase foot traffic and lead to higher occupancies and rents.
