Professor will be tried on charges related to UCLA fatal lab fire

A professor will face trial after being charged with willful violations of California occupational health and safety standards after a staff research assistant's death in a 2008 laboratory fire. The case against Patrick Harran of the University of California, Los Angeles, is thought to be the first prosecution of its kind related to an academic-lab incident in the U.S. Harran could be sentenced to more than four years in prison if he is convicted.
