U.K. officials "leak" tips to reporters via Twitter

The U.K. government is developing a strategy for using Twitter that includes handing out exclusive tidbits of information to favored journalists via Twitter shortly before ministers make official announcements. Some say the officially sanctioned leaks help the government to keep Britain's rather feisty press pack in line, while generating online buzz ahead of big announcements. "Twitter used to be seen as tool for the egocentric and verbally incontinent. But the reality is that it's an extraordinarily useful way of getting talking points out there," an unidentified government official said.
