U.S. to consider LGBT families in student-aid applications

A move by the U.S. Department of Education to consider the income of a student's parents without regard to gender or marital status is a step toward inclusion "that reflects the great diversity of American families," according to Education Secretary Arne Duncan, but it could also mean less federal aid for students who list their same-sex parents' combined incomes. "There is no reason to treat families headed by same-sex couples any differently than those headed by opposite-sex couples, and this is a positive step toward putting all families on a level playing field," said Human Rights Campaign spokesman Michael Cole-Schwartz.
