New report reveals high rate of staff absenteeism in L.A. schools

According to a district study released yesterday, about 7% of the Los Angeles Unified School District's certificated employees are absent each day, a rate well in excess of the 1.6% national average. District officials said they would look for ways to cut absenteeism, which cost the school system $172 million in overtime and substitute costs during the 2003-03 school year.
