Opinion: Mandatory country-of-origin labeling won't work

Food Marketing Institute Executive Vice President John Block writes that a proposed voluntary labeling program would do more to inform consumers than would the "unworkable" mandatory law that he says will drive up costs, lower profits and fail to promote sales. Under a law set to take effect Sept. 30, Block says, Alaska's fisherman and processors will be the first industry to be required to separate their catch and issue certificates declaring a country of origin.
