IDC: Handset shipments dip in Q1, but bright spots emerging

The global recession rocked the mobile-phone industry in the first quarter as shipments fell 15.8% compared with a year earlier, according to a report from the market-intelligence firm IDC, which cited a raft of macroeconomic-related issues for the decline. The report said dealers and phone-makers had become increasingly cautious in managing their inventories, but offered the upbeat prediction that new features and pent-up demand for advanced handsets will spark a recovery in some areas soon.
