United-Continental merger expected to be announced soon

United and Continental airlines are poised to transform the airline industry by announcing they will combine operations, a move that will result in the largest airline in the world. The boards of both airlines would need to approve the merger. Continental CEO Jeff Smisek is said to become head of the combined airline, while United CEO Glenn Tilton would serve as non-executive chairman.
