API-established safety center focuses on SEMS for energy firms

The American Petroleum Institute-established Center for Offshore Safety seeks to help oil and natural gas firms mitigate offshore-drilling weaknesses by collaborating to pinpoint problem signs and by carefully reviewing information from company audits, said Jeff Zinkham, the center's project development manager. So far, the center has concentrated on aiding companies in establishing "safety and environmental management systems" for reducing process-safety risks. "There will be some confidentiality issues to work through, but we want to share" SEMS audits results, Zinkham said.
