Exec: Industry could borrow safety lessons from airline sector

Oil and natural gas companies could take safety lessons from the airline sector to handle the increasing challenges and risks associated with offshore drilling, said Kevin Lacy, senior vice president of drilling at Talisman Energy. Airline passengers are confident about their safety because of aggressive maintenance of equipment and rigorous training of flight staff, Lacy said. "The conditions that we operate in today -- in deepwater environments, in high-pressure environments -- are significantly more challenging than we've ever had in the last 50 years in the industry," Lacy said.
