More newborns face drug withdrawal, study says

The number of babies born with drug withdrawal symptoms tripled from 2000 to 2009, and hospital charges for their care increased from $190 million to $720 million, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Lead author Dr. Stephen Patrick said the problem is a "public health epidemic" that requires action by policymakers and researchers.
