U.S. says homeownership is at lowest level since 1997

The proportion of U.S. families renting hit a 15-year high in the first quarter, while the nation's homeownership rate fell to a 15-year low, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. Foreclosures and a weak economy pushed more people to rent, leading rental vacancy to fall to 8.8%. The homeownership rate, at 65.4%, could drop further, some economists say.
