Re-excision of dysplastic nevi might be unnecessary

Patients who had a histologically dysplastic nevus approaching a microscopic border excised by punch, shave or excision did not develop metastatic melanoma after an average of 17.4 years, according to a retrospective study of 115 patients treated at the Mayo Clinic from 1980 through 1989. The findings show that re-excision might not be necessary for incompletely or narrowly removed mildly or moderately dysplastic nevi, the researchers said.
