Solar-powered plane prepares for global flight

Photovoltaic cells held in a honeycomb structure sandwiched between layers of carbon fiber are the power source for a solar-powered plane that its creators plan to fly around the world. The Solar Impulse team is testing the craft now in flights across the U.S. in preparation for the circumnavigation. Solvay and Bayer MaterialScience are key supporters of the project, with Solvay supplying film and polymers while Bayer has a dedicated team working on the polyurethane and polycarbonate materials used by the aircraft.
