UK carriers may charge more than fare for big luggage

The publication Which? reports that fliers who want to take hand luggage that exceeds an airline's limitations may pay more than their airfare on some flights. The watchdog magazine said that Ryanair and Monarch have made customers pay up big for exceeding luggage requirements -- in some cases, more than the fare was worth. "Even if a suitcase is advertised as cabin sized, don't assume it will be. Our research found that airlines can include wheels and handles in the measurements for their restrictions, whereas manufacturers may only consider the main body of the case," the magazine said.
