Virgin Galactic breaks sound barrier with SpaceShipTwo

During a 10-minute flight over the Mojave Desert, Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo broke the speed of sound. After igniting the rocket for 16 seconds, the aircraft reached 55,000 feet and a speed of Mach 1.2. "Today's supersonic success opens the way for a rapid expansion of the spaceship's powered flight envelope, with a very realistic goal of full space flight by the year's end," said company founder Richard Branson.
