4 cellulosic ethanol plants move toward production phase

Four commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol facilities are slated to go online this year in the U.S., with three of them expected to begin biofuel production as soon as May or June, this article says. Among those plants are DuPont's 30 million-gallon-per-year plant in Nevada, Iowa, and Abengoa Bioenergy's Hugoton, Kan., facility, which can produce 25 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol and 21 megawatts of renewable electricity annually. "The cellulosic and advanced biofuels industry has made very visible progress in commercialization," said Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO's industrial and environmental section. At this stage, stability in the Renewable Fuel Standard is vital, he added.
