Educators help English-language learners find common core success

Educators at an elementary school in Compton, Calif., are working to ensure the success of English-language learners under new Common Core State Standards. Educators have adapted their instruction to incorporate visuals, sophisticated vocabulary and nuanced concepts, such as inferences, to raise the bar for students and ensure they master more than just the basics. "The Common Core tests will go beyond that. Students will need to apply what they've learned to new situations. They will need to show that they understand the material on a higher level," third-grade teacher Alejandra Monroy said.
