American innovation is happening not just in tech and financial hubs like San Francisco, Boston and New York, but also in industrial cities such as Houston and Rochester, N.Y., writes Susan Christopherson. Houston's role as a center of the oil trade, and Rochester's as the capital of the U.S. optics industry, have allowed them to evolve into sector-specific innovation hubs, Christopherson explains.
