India nixes plan to tax GPRS handsets at a higher rate

Indian officials have decided against classifying GPRS handsets as a radio navigational apparatus, which would have levied a 34% tax on the devices. The industry was preparing for a 20% to 25% price increase on high-end GPRS-enabled handsets, but that will be avoided given the handsets now fall under the mobile-phone category.
