Reading First does not improve reading scores

Reading First doesn't help students read any better than their peers at schools that don't participate in the federal program, according to an interim report released by the U.S. Education Department's Institute of Education Sciences, the agency's research arm. U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, who recently likened the reading initiative to "a cure for cancer," had no comment on the report Thursday.
