Thailand considers regional rice cartel

Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej says his government will try to build a regional cartel of rice-producing countries to include Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. Thailand has long considered using its position as the world's largest rice exporter to influence the price in the same way that OPEC tries to set crude oil prices. Unlike corn, wheat and other grains, only a small number of countries export rice. The largest rice producers are China, India and Indonesia, and they consume most of their rice crop domestically.
