Agriculture products brighten Q1 earnings for chemical companies

Chemical companies BASF and Dow Chemical reported better-than-expected profits on Thursday, with their agricultural products credited for helping to counter slumping demand in other sectors such as home building and autos. BASF's first-quarter operating profit exceeded analysts' expectations despite a 58% decrease in profit, and Dow Chemical had an unexpected first-quarter profit of $24 million.
