The ATA and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood hurried to counter Vice President Joe Biden's suggestion that air travel should be avoided during the flu outbreak. "Flying is safe and flying is healthy and flying to Mexico is safe," LaHood said in a speech to aviation professionals, adding "in our department, we're going to listen to the experts." Meanwhile, ATA President and CEO James May told FoxBusiness that "we take our job of providing safe travel to our passengers and our crews as our number one priority, and there is nothing that stands in the way of that. If it weren't safe to fly, we wouldn't do it."
