Railroads, including Rail America's Connecticut Southern Railroad, have seen growing demand -- a sign of a recovering shipping market. While the industry is not back up to peak shipping levels, there are positive signs of recovery, says Association of American Railroads spokeswoman Holly Arthur. "The shipping of containers -- known as intermodal freight -- is up 3.5%," Arthur says. This growth trend could be attributed to the cost and environmental benefits of shipping by rail rather than by truck, said CSO General Manager James Bonner. "Railroads are far more fuel-efficient," he said.
