Exxon exec discusses keys to improving offshore-worker safety

Energy companies can eliminate the risk of severe consequences such as fatalities if they concentrate on the details of proper safety procedures, said Neil Duffin, president of ExxonMobil Development. The company has "found that a statistically significant number of lower severity incidents on any given day could have resulted in a serious injury or even a fatality," Duffin said. "This suggests that we may need to shift our focus more on the critical events that have a combination of low probability and high consequence."
