Interior prepares tougher safety rules for offshore drilling

The Department of the Interior is proceeding with plans to toughen safety rules for offshore drilling. The rules include new well-design standards and a requirement that a third party prove that blowout preventers can seal drill pipes. The final standards were received by the White House Office of Management and Budget last week from the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.
